Prior to this federal ruling, North Dakota had a constitutional amendment, adopted in November 2004, and state statutes that explicitly defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
On Wednesday, a state Senate committee voted 6-1 to send the resolution to the full Senate, the North Dakota Monitor reported.
Similar efforts — which would not have any direct sway with the nation’s top courts — have been introduced in a handful of states this year. He said he supports the right for same-sex couples to be married. The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance and can be used for a ceremony anywhere within North Dakota.
