    With the show largely supporting this sentiment through the way it portrays the characters' actions, it's understandable why My Husband's Not Gay was met with thousands of petitions and public condemnations when it was released.

There is a singular scene where an openly Gay man calls this out for being wrong, but the rest of the special is filled with entertaining moments like the men trying not to gawk at others during a basketball game. The episode highlights the complex and challenging issues that come with balancing personal desires with societal expectations and the ways in which this can affect the people around them.

    There's Never Been a Show Like 'My Husband's Not Gay'

    While My Husband's Not Gay is a fantastic title and premise, it definitely isn't the first time TLC has crafted an image of quirky comedy around a group's troubling lifestyle.

    The men refer to themselves as "SSA" or "same-sex attracted," not gay, and believe that they are not violating their faith by continuing to live with their wives.

    The episode begins by showing the men living their day-to-day lives, going about their business, spending time with their families and friends. The men express their beliefs and share their feelings on how they have always known they were attracted to men, but they do not see themselves as homosexual.

    As the episode progresses, viewers are introduced to the wives and their experiences living with men who are attracted to other men but choose to continue living a heterosexual lifestyle.

    On several occasions, they talk about how they are happy to have wives who understand their attraction to men and how having a wife has not changed their feelings.

    Viewers are also able to watch as the men attempt to date women and follow through with traditional courtship rituals such as asking the father for permission and even proposing.

    They decided to ignore this aspect of themselves, instead adopting the heterosexuality necessary to have wives and remain in their staunchly anti-LGBTQ+ church. One wife even describes finding out about her husband's attraction to men after she was already married to him, and how she stayed with him, hoping that he would change his mind.

    The men explore why they want to have straight, traditional marriages instead of living openly as gay men.

    'My Husband's Not Gay' is an episode that features four Mormon men who have the unique or unusual desire to live a heterosexual lifestyle; however, they claim that they are attracted to men. And initially, they do the exact same with My Husband's Not Gay; it focuses on four men, three of whom are married, as they speak to the camera about how they've always been attracted to other men but have refused that part of themselves because their church views it as a sin.

    While glossing over how this communal place of worship would exile them should they try to live as openly Gay, the men and their wives work hard to "refuse these temptations," implementing various daily practices to keep their "unholy attractions" at bay.

    The Atlantic. It is completely fine for people to enjoy the special for its absurdity and humor, but they must recognize when watching it: To the wrong kind of viewers, this is the dangerous evidence they need to prove LGBTQ+ people don't need to exist. "My Husband's Not Gay is definitely not worth the uproar".
