As we as a country continue to make strides legally toward an egalitarian society, culturally we are catching up too, with GRiZ’s coming out statement identifying him as a role model for today’s LGBT youth who makes it totally cool to be gay. Kwiecinski’s piece is a celebratory and triumphant coming out statement, but more importantly, a highly necessary one.
Over the years, GRiZ has donated well over $225,000 as part of the GRiZMAS shows. The last thing any teen wants is to be ‘uncool.’ Hell, the typical lingo for things that were lame was ‘gay’ and someone who wasn’t cool ‘fag’ or ‘faggot.’ Every day those words are so casually tossed into conversation as if it were true.
Via his annual run of GRiZMAS holiday shows at Detroit Masonic Temple, which has sold out every year since launching in 2014, and the coinciding 12 Days of GRiZMAS series, he has raised funds for music education programs within public schools across the greater Detroit area. GRiZ summarizes it best: “There’s so much growth on this album.” Cohesively, RideWaves captures the everyday experiences of human existence, all while soundtracked in GRiZ’s funkytastic fashion.

In April, GRiZ released his celebrated sixth studio album,Ride Waves, receiving praise from the likes of Billboard, i-D, Office Mag, among others.
Metro Detroit native and rising EDM superstar GRiZ (also known as Grant Kwiecinski) wrote a blog post for the Huffington Post today detailing his journey with coming to terms with his sexuality. And without warning, high school came in full force. During Pride Month this year, GRiZ was tapped to be the face of national underwear brand MeUndies’ Pride collection, donating a portion of the profit to the Happy Hippie Foundation, a nonprofit that rallies young people to fight injustice facing homeless and LGBTQ youth.
Instead of giving into that fear and sadness, we need to shine. I told myself I wasn’t ready, or that the right one hadn’t come along yet. GRiZ has also headlined sets at Electric Forest and Lightning in a Bottle, as well as his sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheatre double-headers inDenver for five consecutive years and counting.

Kwiecinski’s statement comes at the start of LGBT Pride Month, which is celebrated every June with numerous events worldwide that attract millions of LGBTQIA+ participants and their allies. These secrets are heavy, with their ability to “drive you crazy and make you think, feel, and do crazy, sometimes harmful, shit,” and for a long time, Kwiecinski carried his alone.
However, GRiZ’s coming out statement is ultimately crafted as a positive message to others, particularly to younger kids who may struggle themselves with the same problems he faced.
