I thought Lena was joking. One of the most recent additions to the series is Trig's new girlfriend, Imani, who is played by actress Jasmine Davis. Their personalities are completely different.”

The series has already proven to be a trailblazer. It’s only when a man is challenged by a strong woman to step up to the plate and be the man that he’s supposed to be.

“In the Black community, there is a stereotype that, and I hate using the phrase ‘masculine presenting,’ but I don't know a better phrase to use yet, and I know that's a very triggering topic and phrase among our community as well…" He continued:

"But typically, if a gay Black man does not fit the typical portrayal or stereotype of a gay man then it's automatically assumed that this person is in the closet or trying to pretend to be straight or that they're a self-hating gay.

Season seven of The Chi was released on May 18, 2025, and has aired eight episodes so far.

While the rest of the season is yet to be released, Lynn Whitfield (who plays Alicia), Luke James (who plays Victor "Trig" Taylor), and Jason Weaver (who plays Rashaad "Shaad" Marshall) spoke at the Essence Festival of Culture’s Film Fest about the season, their characters, behind the scenes details and much more.

But there's more to it than just that. Quincy LeNear Gossfield is a Chicago native, in fact, and brings a unique perspective to the show by delving into the “truth” of the city. I think that’s what Alicia has really done for Trig."

He continued,

"What Trig has done for Alicia is shown her real compassion and letting her know that no matter what, he has her back.

No surprise — they helped set the tone, style, and even creating a lookbook for future directors. So, I think that’s something that we’re really showing the audience — it may not be the conventional type of relationship, but the foundation of it is very real and passionate. Who is Trig's girlfriend on 'The Chi'?

Trig's girlfriend on The Chi is named Imani (played by actress Jasmine Davis) and we just met her this season.

Season six ventures into new territory while still tracking the ups and downs and in-betweens of beloved characters like Emmett (Jacob Latimore), Kiesha (Birgundi Baker), Douda (Curtis Cook), Trig (Luke James), Kevin (Alex R. Hibbert), Jake (Michael Epps), Jada (Yolanda Ross), and more.

The new season's big reveal is bound to entice fans as it unveils two new gay characters named after the Gossfields themselves — and in the show, “Deondray” and “Quincy” are engaged.

This makes her the first transgender character to ever appear on the show.

During the episode, Trig (played by actor Luke James Boyd) and Imani go to a gay bar together and he ends up in a big fight after a man hits on him.

The Chi, the American drama which follows a neighborhood in the South Side, Chicago, specifically the lives of Emmet, Brandon, Ronnie, and Kevin, is currently on its seventh season.

She is a Chicago native who moved to L.A. to pursue a modeling and acting career. “When Quincy and I approached her about maybe bringing back a revamped version of our show The DL Chronicles, she thought the subject matter was a little past The DL Chronicles phenomenon.”

That 2005 series was, in fact, bold and ahead of its time, featuring a series of short stories about men of color who lead double sex lives.

That’s all I see when I look at you," Trig shared, to which Imani responded: "You can’t love me and hate him. “Lena likes to challenge narratives, and to take characters we expect to be one way and make them something different. “The writers are still dealing with that, but they were named in our honor, and I was completely shocked. It doesn’t work like that."

After this scene, fans are now curious to know more about Iman's story and Trig's sexuality, so here's hoping we get more answers during the next episode.

In a recent interview, The Chi creator Lena Waithe opened up about having the first transgender character to ever appear on the series.

Always. It’s not just simple entertainment — it’s something that can live with you and hopefully humanize others’ experiences. The producer-director couple say that the characters, and how they are represented here, were vital to help break down stereotypes about the LGBTQ+ community that are typically portrayed in shows.

“We were having a conversation with Lena Waithe about Black gay masculine characters and how they tend to not be in any real relationships when they're on television,” explained Deondray Gossfield.
