Lilo & Stich director Dean Fleischer Camp has addressed concerns that the live-action film "erases" Pleakley's drag. Some have even called them “Lilo’s two dads.”
Yet, if you thought that answer was heartbreaking, wait until you see Dean Fleischer Camp’s delivery in his TikTok video, which is shared below:
I don’t think this switch will ruin the story of this live-action enhanced iteration.
The comment in question read: "How dare they ruin Pleakley's disguise like that".
In response, Dean admitted: "I have had people message me, 'Why is Pleakley not wearing a dress?' And I just want to say, I tried. However, the implication amounted to what was widely regarded as a piece of positive queer representation.
Respectively voiced by the late David Ogden Stiers and Kids in the Hall alum Kevin McDonald in the 2002 original, Jumba and Pleakley eventually put aside their differences and become part of the same ohana as the Lilo & Stitch cast’s main characters.
Lilo is othered by her peers for not fitting into the mold but fear not, she soon finds a community.
The aliens in Lilo and Stitch, like Lilo, don't conform to the norms of society, or in their case, the norms of Earth. Passionate about entertainment since grade school, the movies have always held a special place in his life, which explains his current occupation.
Disney most likely did not want to face controversy from the Republican and conservative market so they decided to erase any aspect of the original film that could be seen as Trans coded. Mike's expertise ranges from James Bond to everything Alita, making for a brilliantly eclectic resume. And together, these misfit aliens form a bond with Lilo and become a family, from celebrating holidays and milestones together to even moving in with Lilo and her older sister. Pleakley helped me understand that it is okay to dress in clothes that are traditionally worn by the opposite sex. Not only are critics praising the movie for "capturing the spirit of the original" but Maia Kealoha and Sydney Elizebeth Agudong are receiving widespread acclaim for their performances as sisters Lilo and Nani respectively.
Nevertheless, the remake has received some backlash.
John Musker and Ron Clements) and Mulan (dir. It’s a core piece of their characters, especially when they first visit Earth as an odd couple randomly paired off in Lilo & Stitch.
That being said, I can see why fans, and even the Marcel, the Shell with Shoes On director/co-writer, are disappointed over the changes made.
Throughout the film, Jumba and Pleakley disguise themselves as humans to fit in but Pleakley soon realizes that he enjoys dressing as a woman, despite being male.
Now, the two are being tracked down by alien bounty hunters, Jumbaa (David Ogden Stiers) and Pleakley (Kevin McDonald), who are tasked to bring Stitch home. Lilo develops a found family with those who don't fit into society the same way many queer communities develop.
As a kid, these elements of Lilo and Stitch meant the world to me.
As a result, Pleakley has been hailed by fans as a drag icon. Mike graduated from Drew University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, but swore off of running for public office a long time ago.
Lilo & Stitch is officially back. I know it helped me with mine.
