'My Little Pony' to introduce first same-sex couple on the show

Following in the footsteps of the beloved cartoon "Arthur," another iconic children's program, "My Little Pony," is set to introduce a same-sex couple this weekend -- just in time for Pride month.

In "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic," Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty will be introduced as a lesbian couple raising little pony Scootaloo, Buzzfeed News reports.

Buzzfeed spoke to show writer and producer Michael Vogel and he explained that this couple was first introduced two years ago in the comics.

"Nicole [Dubuc, the showrunner] and I thought this was a great opportunity to organically introduce an LGBTQ couple in the series, and we asked Hasbro and they approved it," he said.

And now audiences of the animated series will get to meet the sweet couple as well.

"It was something we all wanted to do — bring this out couple into the final season and make them 'officially' a part of the MLP world," he said.

Lyra and BonBon are gonna be PISSED about all this coverage," Vogel joked about the other characters in the animated children's show.

The addition of LGBTQ characters in "My Little Pony" follows the inclusion of a same-sex marriage in "Arthur" last month.

The premiere episode of the 22nd season revealed Mr.

Ratburn is gay. So it just felt like something important to do."

Vogel even tweeted earlier this week, writing, "Hey hey!!! "With [co-showrunner] Josh [Haber] and Nicole running the final season together, it was something we all wanted to do — bring this out couple into the final season and make them ‘officially’ a part of the MLP world.

"My Little Pony has always been about friendship and accepting people (or ponies) that are different from you," he continued.

Airing smack dab in the middle of Pride (though it aired earlier in Europe), “The Last Crusade” will make for the TV debut of the couple — and fans are already celebrating.

Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty have been canonically in a lesbian relationship since their appearance in the book My Little Pony: Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe, according to writer Michael Vogel:

"Nicole and I thought this was a great opportunity to organically introduce an LGBTQ couple in the series, and we asked Hasbro and they approved it," Vogel told BuzzFeed.

Now, the pair (who sometimes care for the character Scootaloo while her parents are away) are heading to the small screen.

Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty make their debut on the show in the season's 12th episode.

"Man... Way to go," Haber wrote. When the fan asked for clarification, Vogel explained, "When I say 'cute couple' I'm saying that Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are a cute couple. Yes."

Some fans pointed out that the couple exists in the "My Little Pony" books, but had not been included in the animated show — until now.

Vogel then included his fellow writers, Nicole Dubuc and Josh Haber in the conversation.

Why? They’re the first gay couple to appear on the animated program. The first episode that includes the same-sex couple will air on June 15, right in the middle of Pride month.

When a photo of the characters was tweeted by a fan account, "My Little Pony" writer Michael Vogel commented on the image: "What a cute couple!!!!!"

A fan then raised the question — are the two rainbow ponies in the photo romantically involved?

@NicoleDubuc, @joshhaber and I doin what we can to bring more EQuality to EQuestria!! Ratburn and the Special Someone," Arthur's beloved teacher gets married to a man.

However, the episode did not originally air in one state, as Alabama Public Television (APT) chose ban it.

The decision was made back in April when the local PBS station was notified about the content of the episode APT programming director Mike Mckenzie told AL.com.

It is unclear how the same-sex couple in "My Little Pony" will be received by viewers when it airs on Discovery Family this Saturday.

Last month, popular animated kids' show Arthur made headlines when Mr Ratburn, the third-grade teacher of the title character, not only came out as gay but also married his boyfriend Patrick in the PBS show's season 22 premiere.

And now, just a month later, the My Little Pony franchise is all set to introduce their first same-sex couple in the upcoming episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

In an episode titled The Last Crusade, viewers will be introduced to Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty, a lesbian couple who look after a Pegasus named Scootaloo.

The episode has already been shown in Europe and will air in the United States this Saturday on Discovery Family.

"I think it’s fantastic that we can show that what truly defines a family is love — that, to me, is the core of My Little Pony," co-showrunner Nicole Dubuc told Buzzfeed News on Wednesday.

"Nicole and I thought this was a great opportunity to organically introduce an LGBTQ couple in the series, and we asked Hasbro and they approved it," writer and producer Michael Vogel added.

After the tweets started getting widespread attention online, the writers began sharing the media coverage. Well done.

They may only be on screen for about two minutes, but Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty’s appearance in this Saturday’s episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a big deal.

"'My Little Pony' has always been about friendship and accepting people (or ponies) that are different from you. "I get more and more proud of season 9 with every episode. #PrideMonth."

This game-changing episode follows PBS cartoon "Arthur," which featured a same-sex marriage last month.
