Homosexuality was “normal”: a natural, involuntary condition that required access to mainstream institutions, discipline, and responsibility—not special rights.
Like military service, legal marriage was not a new concept for many gays and lesbians who had been married or lived in long-term domestic partnerships. They’re not worried about their rights being stripped away at all.
But some folks feel like the gay community has deviated so far from its original focus that it no longer actually represents the sexual liberation it was intended to. Most importantly, if there is a group of gay men who want to call themselves “normal,” then it’s essential that the gay community doesn’t ignore them. Communities do naturally evolve and grow.
And that sets us apart from the radical left, which insists that to be truly “LGBT,” one must embrace Marxist economic policies, open borders, and lawless streets. And every year, it seems like a new letter is added to the alphabet—so much so that even folks in the community are often unsure of our latest acronym. It could be a gateway to normality and to specific rights like child custody, decriminalized sex, and financial security.
We have our own voice, our own priorities, and, yes, our own political power. If you look at the major gay media outlets like Out and The Advocate, there is endless coverage of trans and queer issues (as there should be). Donald Trump was nearly assassinated, and Kamala Harris jumped into the race in record time.
As municipalities began to concede civil rights protections demanded by LGBTQ activists, the backlash was predictable: Heterosexual conservatives mobilized to take back normality. By 2024, a lot had changed. But, I’m now wondering, are they leaving out the quote-unquote “normal” gays? We’re not interested in compulsory pronouns, the endless victimhood narrative, or the push to redefine gender itself.
If George H.W. Bush could still maintain in his losing 1992 campaign that homosexuality “in my view is not normal,” popular culture had begun to disagree. While there is strength in banding together, one problem that arises is simply that we don’t all necessarily agree. Network television shows like The Real World (1994), My So-Called Life (1994), and Will and Grace (1997) brought lesbian and gay people into American living rooms as friends and sympathetic characters.
Who Are The “Normal” Gays?
By the 1990s, it seemed possible. The LGBTQ community is a cluster of different subgroups. Meaning, many gay men don’t want being gay to define them.
They feel accepted by the Conservative Party—for the most part. What does it mean to be a “normal gay”? Some, proudly wearing MAGA hats, are racking up thousands of followers in social media proclaiming their right-wing pride.
Then there’s the clash between ideologies within the LGBTQ community.
