For us as producers, we want you to be happy! Then you move to the city and you have to reinvent yourself there.
Laura Dern, to me and to so many LGBTQ+ people, is gay canon. I met her and her daughter after, and I think her daughter being there affirmed that she is in culture in a big way and she is a fixture and culture for young and old people.
So you did get to have some time with her?
Yeah. So from then on it's been like, you're my person.
We are firmly in the Dernaissance, between Big Little Lies, Marriage Story and Little Women.
Altogether, the song, the montage, (oh and the Oscar that she won a night later hopefully made for a birthday weekend that Laura Dern will never forget.
I encourage all of you to check out the performance by the GMCLA at the 2020 Spirit Awards so that you might be given some context as to why this was so worth writing about. I know that people were coming up to her at the Oscars and singing the song to her and that was surreal to me.
It's about a white 50's lived-through-AIDS group versus a 20's queer diverse group and two of them fall in love. In addition to the queer films that were nominated, she highlighted what she called “some of the gayest moments in other films that you may not have realized were gay.” Accompanied by a performance by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) was a video montage featuring iconic queer moments from film in the last year.
There's this voiceover, she has the first episode of season two that's she's talking, it's shots of the Los Angeles skyline and she's talking so earnestly about how every empire falls and this one will fall too. I want to let it happen and I'm not sure why I'm not going to push it, but I do think karmically and spiritually, she is going to be around in my life hopefully forever.

Laura Dern Is A Gay Icon: And That’s on Periodt
While debating whether it would be impactful for me to write a review of the 92nd Academy Awards or if absolutely no one would care, I decided to narrow down my focus and celebrate first-time Oscar winner: Laura Dern.
And then I'll watch it once a year still and her performance and that character changed my perception about what writing should be and what stories could be like. I first saw it when I was 20 or 21 and I think I watched both seasons eight times that year. I hope I do it well, TBD.
And maybe one day you'll write something for Laura Dern.
I hope to.
It's the most profound gay joy and she felt that. Halfway through the song, the lyrics began mentioning only the gayest moments of Laura Dern, both in Marriage Story and throughout her entire career.
Among these was Dern taking off her shoes, ordering a kale salad, sporting slutty attire in court, and “just all of Laura Dern.” It did not take long before Dern and the rest of the audience realized that this was no small tribute but truly an entire production dedicated to her and her success in film resonating with the LGBTQ+ community.
It's been revived and killed so many times.
And that's what also makes the song work, is that it's just gay joy.
