Being Hard Gay for Laughs and Cash
In 2005, comedian Masaki Sumitani became the most popular funny man in Japan.
It took a lot of flattery from many different sources to even vaguely convince Sumitani that he has the looks to make it as a model, but after taking some test shots with a former classmate who’s now a cameraman for the cover of fashion magazines, he can see his own potential. After three years, the video has just under 70,000 views.
On February 19th, 2006, a user by the name of Grommet on the forums at Bakakage.net started a thread entitled For the NANA fans (link via Wayback Machine) and posted a link to another Hard Gay video.
According to an interview conducted by the online news site Owarai Natalie, while Sumitani is still interested in continuing work as a comedian, he has decided to revamp his public image. Because of this, it was allowed to be aired and not deemed offensive to Japanese audiences.
On the show, Hard Gay goes around performing acts of charity (or yonaoshi, “social improvement” → source: wikipedia link) for unsuspecting bystanders, wearing his fetish outfit while accompagnied by the Ricky Martin's "Livin’ la Vida Loca" song.
He has also trademarked gesture and vocalizations such as his "pelvic thrust", his "Hoooooo" (フゥ~!) or "Foohhhh!" (フォー!) running jokes shouts or also his "Sei sei sei sei sei" shout with his palm in front of the person’s face.
The main theme of Hard Gay's act relies on the idea that Hard Gay is a foreigner, and as such, can get away with outlandish behavior.
And, after a severe foot injury in July of 2009, his wrestling career has also been forced to a close. As he recovered from his wrestling injury, his bikini model wife continued to work and support the family.
Last year Sumitani, still using the name Hard Gay, teamed up with his old partner in wrestling, Makoto Izubuchi, aka Real Gay, to compete in "The Manzai," a televised contest for Japanese comedy duos.
Mawaan is an activist among LGBTQ comics, having gone to Pakistan to film the documentary How Gay Is Pakistan?, which explores what it means to be gay in a country where it’s deemed illegal. Many of us might know him as a writer for SpongeBob Squarepants and for his hilarious podcast, The Juice With Solomon Georgio.

Jerrod Carmichael
Pre-2022, Jerrod Carmichael wouldn’t have even made it onto this list, considering he only came out to the public in his most recent HBO stand-up special, Rothaniel, directed by Bo Burnham.
New York magazine placed Bob eighth in the list of “most powerful drag queens in America” and he was the first Black Drag Race queen to reach over one million followers on Instagram. He wants to be a serious model.” The management seems to support him in his decision. Sumitani did hang out in Osaka’s gay district, where he purchased his costume, but rumors quickly circulated that comedian, who recently fathered his second child, was just putting on a gay act.
These rumors were apparently verified when a tabloid showed him out on a date with bikini model Anna Suzuki.
The clip shows some footage of the game as well as dancing girls.
Think they got Sumitani on the cheap?
